The Cattle at Carl Dethlefs and Sons have been bred for performance
for over 50 years. Outstanding growth and milking ability have been
priorities thru the years. Our cows have been responsible for making
our bull sales one of the more successful sales year after year.
Our bulls must have good EPD’s, but more importantly, we believe in
using bulls that not only have performed at the top of their groups
but look like they have performance bred into them with width,
depth, and structural soundness. When possible, we like to see the
bulls that are used in our AI program. They must walk wide, be
straight on the corners, and look like they have earned their EPD’s.
Calving starts around March 1. We believe in the calving ease and
mothering ability bred into our herd so much that we trust the cows
to get the job done unattended. Extra care might be taken if the
weather will be terribly cold or wet.
This cow herd has great disposition. The calves are worked and
identified at birth. If a cow has wild or aggressive blood, they are
down the road. We don’t need to get hurt, nor do you.
Just a little bit about the Carl Dethlefs and Sons herd. It has been
a little over half a century since Carl Dethlefs first purchased
registered Angus cattle in 1950. He joined the Angus Association in
1955 as Carl Dethlefs and Sons. In 1965, Carl sold half interest in
the herd to his son, Jerry. They were partners until Carl's death in
1986.
Jerry and Dianna, and Gary, with his wife Dar and their family,
Connor, Callie, Capri, and Clayton are the current owners of Carl
Dethlefs and Sons herd. Their ranch is located on the Middle Loup
River between Rockville and Loup City, in central Nebraska.
Daughters Carol Dethlefs and her children, Ashley and Brandon
Schriner, and Tracy and her children, Paden, Shelby, and Trey also
retain an interest in the cattle.
